Science has always been called upon to solve world problems and it seems our world will continue depending on scientific innovations to solve the most pressing problems. While there are major problems to grapple with (such as cures for cancer and HIV/AIDS, malaria, global warming, etc) the world continues to hope that solutions will be found someday. There is reason for optimism. When you consider that small pox was a scourge that claimed millions of lives in the past and that it was eventually eradicated with the development of a vaccine, it is not too much to hope that some of the huge problems that bedevil our world today could equally get eradicated through the power of science. Some ambitious projects – While scientists work hard to seek solutions to some of the most serious problems, the level of funding available for scientific research is hardly ever commensurate with the problems at hand. One of the most ambitious projects currently being carried on is known as the Global Development Lab. This project was initiated by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in April 2014 and its main objective is to end extreme poverty by the year 2030. Through the project, USAID provides funding of $1 billion per year to institutions and organizations that will use technology to achieve the lofty dream. The Lab then brings universities and research institutions together to find technology-driven solutions that will eradicate extreme poverty globally. While the funding might seem colossal, it is important to remember that the problems it is supposed to address are rather monumental. They include problems of food security and water scarcity as well as climate change, among others. The enormity of the task at hand is perhaps best exemplified by the fact that USAID has managed to attract private sector partners including Coca-Cola and Unilever. There are also plenty of private sector players who have been trying to use agricultural innovations to fight extreme poverty. In parts of Asia and Africa where crop yields have continued to deteriorate due to land degradation and lack of guaranteed sources of water, private sector players have been developing drought resistant varieties of grains that not only withstand harsh weather conditions but sometimes also increase the yield.
The world is plagued by a myriad of problems which scientific innovations could help solve. Considering the victories that science has achieved in the past, it’d be reasonable to say that even the current problems are not insurmountable.

The Importance of Science in Early Childhood Education

Why is there widespread indifference to the sciences as people go through the school system? Why do many people find sciences so difficult? Researchers suggest that it all depends on the experiences that we get when we are introduced to science. That the many people who declare that they have no love for science do so because of the unpleasant experiences they had when they first got introduced to the subject. When you consider that science is full of hypotheses and that it requires an inquisitive mind, it is easy to see why this is true. Children are by nature inquisitive. As they explore the world around them, they want to know why the snow falls, why the sun rises in the east and why the sky is blue. Children then are naturally trying to get answers to questions that scientists have already answered or are struggling with. Science therefore complements the curiosity that is natural in kids. When taught by a great teacher, children will therefore learn the subject almost effortlessly.
Science forms a basis for future problem solving – Science teaches the young learners how things are made and why certain phenomena occur. They learn why it rains and how the clothes they wear are made. They learn why there are many people without access to clean water and why global warming is a problem. In a nutshell, science provides the perfect avenue for teaching children about the problems that the world has to grapple with. Knowing the efforts that have to be made to solve the world’s problems makes the young learners know the importance of solving problems, a trait that will prove useful throughout the kids’ lives. Independence of thought – Science lets the young learner know that things are not always the way they seem. They learn that theories have to be proved. A child who gets a sound teaching in science will grow up to become an individual who is independent minded and one not easily swayed by the opinions of others unless there is sound evidence.


Given that science is a mandatory subject in school, and seeing how it fits in so well with the nature of a child, how can parents and educators work to eliminate the apathy that most modern children have towards science? Children will develop a natural love for science if their first encounters with the subject are amazing an unforgettable. Through creative play, an educator can inculcate a love for the subject that will stay with the child through a lifetime.

Vision and Science

There have been arguments in science about vision verses blindness. Some people portray things differently when viewing something verses not being able to see at all. Other’s claim the blind can absorb more information not being distracted by seeing. It makes you wonder if you blind folded yourself and then studied for a test would you do better. If someone was to read the lesson to you? How about this example. What if you blacked out all the windows in your house where you could barely see, then listened to a video to study? Or let’s say you took a different path. For instance I just had my windows cleaned, by the way if you’ve never paid for this you should try it once. I use a Spokane Window Cleaning Company called A Pane in the Glass. They’re awesome check them out on Facebook. Anyways, let’s try this experiment. Cover your windows completely with mud, then listen to the study material. Take the test and let me know how you did. Then the second part of the experiment will be to clean the windows letting the most sunlight shine in, and listen to another video before taking the test. To get the best results from this test we need to ensure there aren’t any chemicals in the formula used to clean the windows. I’d suggest learning what they use when cleaning windows or cleaning them yourself.

After you have taken both tests, compare the results. If you test out better when there was little sunshine, then you may want to board up your windows every time you study for an exam. Or I guess you could simply where one of those things people use to sleep during the day. You could also just go into a room with no windows, turn off the light and close the door. On a side note does anyone have anything fun planned for the weekend.  We are going to spend Saturday with the kids, then my sister is going to babysit Saturday night.  I’m thinking dinner and a movie sounds good.  Anyone know of what’s playing and good?   Sunday we will go to church in the morning then probably meet sis and the kids for lunch at our favorite brunch.
